A lot of people have asked me about how Punk Van Gogh came into being. I started with one of
Van Gogh's
self-portraits. I transferred a high-contrast black-and-white photocopy on
to a linoleum block.
Nuvia made the punk rock modifications, and I went
to work with my carving tools. I made the initial batch of prints on my
dining room table.
Then I took the block over to a friend's garage who has a big, beautiful
press made in 1885. The rest is 19th century technology at its finest!
Since
I made the print last month, Punk Van Gogh has had a charmed life.
First, it was used in a zine as part of a group show the Border Corps was involved in at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
Then the print was auctioned off at a benefit at a gallery in Little Italy. Old Vinnie Van
Gogh would be
proud!
